President’s Inaugural Address

Kouhei Ohnishi, the 102th President of IEEJ in 2015

01 大西公平様(会長)The Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan (IEEJ) is an open community where members express their opinions and thoughts on scientific issues of electrical engineering in atmosphere of freedom.  The raison d’etre of IEEJ depends on how deeply the contributions will be made in the electrical engineering by exchange of information and distinction of mutual difference of claims.  The inside and outside activities of the institute should follow this principle and such activities should be open not only to the members but also to the society.

According to the Annual Report on the Aging Society 2014 (the white book on aging) released from the Office of Cabinet, the ratio of total population over 65 years old in the world will reach one sixths in the year of 2050.  In Japan, this value will be around two fifth in that time.  A paradigm that more quantity brings more developed society is dying gradually together with aging of the society, and long-term declination and stagnation will deteriorate such super-mature society.

A sustainable development of the society to come should be realized not by increase of quantity but by enrichment of quality, in particular enrichment of quality of life (QOL).  The electrical engineering will contribute very much in such area because of its convenience and friendliness for improvement of QOL.  This means IEEJ with more openness and freedom should play more important role in the future society.  I, as a President, would like to run the organization in such a way that IEEJ shows both a new direction for sustainable development of the society and a new management for mutual merit of the members and the society.

Your kind cooperation and warm support would be most appreciated.
