Current Situations and Problems of LSI Design and Education
Investigating R&D committee on Educational methodology for VLSI design
Keyword : Integrated circuits, Analog, Digital, Design, Education
The use of Large Scale Integrated circuit (LSI) has been increasing explosive due to high performance and/or multifunctional electronic equipment. Such LSI's should have high performance with multi-functionality, and a design different for each product is necessary in such an LSI. Since advanced knowledge is often needed for the LSI design, development time increases, so the lack of design engineers becomes a problem. Therefore, it has been a serious problem how to design the LSI efficiently in a short term and also to have better designers. However, the technological progress is rapid, and the educational curriculum for design engineers and students aiming to be the design engineer is not adequate in the higher education institutions such as universities. Therefore, it is a pressing necessity to investigate and to create the model educational programs for the design engineers. This report is a summary of research results on the current situations and problems of LSI design and education by the IEEJ Investigating R&D committee on Educational methodology for VLSI design. Chapter 1 describes LSI design, current situations and problems of the education in general situations. In Chapter 2, the purpose of this committee establishment is described. Chapter 3 is a summary of committee's activity. Chapter 4 introduces requirements from industries and case studies from governments and universities. In Chapter 5, current situations and problems of LSI design and education are discussed in detail from the viewpoints of general analog circuits, analog circuits for radio frequency, digital circuits and systems. In Chapter 6, the LSI design environment at universities in the analog field and the digital field is described. Chapter 7 describes our proposal together with future problems and a report summary.
