The oxide garnet {Tb3}[Sc2-xLux](Al3)O12 (TSLAG) has been developed as alternative to Tb3Ga5O12 (TGG). TSLAG possesses superior properties in terms of transmittance, Verdet constant, and radiation resistance. Therefore, it’s being incorporated in high-power laser-machinery. Further, PrF3 and CeF3 fluoride crystals have been studied as unique Faraday rotators for the UV-visible region. These have a wide UV transparency, where nowadays only Faraday glasses of low performance are available. It is shown that both fluorides exhibit outstanding Verdet constants in the UV due to the closeness of the absorption edge to the Faraday transition wavelength. The performance of optical isolators based on present Faraday crystals is discussed.
