Fusion Power Reactor Based on Spherical Tokamak
Investigating R&D Committee for Economic Fusion Reactor
Keyword : spherical tokamak, fusion, power reactor, feasibility, high beta
Fusion energy is expected as a safe, environmentally compatible and sustainable energy resource. Fusion research has been significantly improved in last 50 years. So far, improved confinement modes have been observed and the scientific break-even is confirmed. This committee has tried to clarify key issues through the design activity of fusion power reactor with present technology and materials. In this report, physics and technology for the fusion reactor are reviewed in the first 3 chapters, and the conceptual design of spherical tokamak (ST) fusion power station is presented in the following chapter. It is revealed that superconducting ST has a potential to resolve following major key issues: (1) confinement, (2) steady state operation, (3) neutron damage, (4) cost, (5) tritium breeding. Although many unresolved technical and physics issues remain but no critical problem is found. Fusion power reactor will be realized if enthusiastic efforts will be continuously dedicated.
